Youth workers, young people and organisations came out in force to celebrate the best of youth work at The Regional YouthWork Unit North East’s Annual Awards Ceremony last month. Solar Learning staff, volunteers and young people attended the ceremony held at Sunderland’s Stadium of Light.

Solar Learning is pleased to announce news of a new development and partnership with the social enterprise UnLtd on the Live UnLtd programme. We will be working together to encourage young people from across the North East to apply for grant funding to develop enterprising projects and that benefit their community, with Solar’s team providing support via our Youth Enterprise Hub.

Our Urban Games & Hip Hop project team will be involved in a new partnership with The Biscuit Factory and The University of Northumbria as part of an events that will take place over the weekend of the Late Shows across Newcastle and Gateshead. The event will take place on May 19th this year at The Holy Biscuit in Shieldfield Newcastle, bringing together skaters, free runners and BMX riders in an exhibition, performance and showcase.

Solar Learning is about to go undergo a big change to the staff team in the next couple of months, with plans underway to recruit 3 Youth Worker Apprentices and 1 Business Administrator Apprentice. Supported by the Apprenticeship team from Newcastle College and with additional support coming from A4e the organisation will be supporting the 4 new recruits to the team through 2012.

Solar Learning Services in partnership with Reviving the Heart of the West End a Newcastle upon Tyne based charity launched a new programme called Business Sparks on 14th November 2011. The new Business Sparks programme aims to offer over the next 6 months opportunities to support young people to set up or develop their own businesses enterprises or social enterprises.

The Urban Games & Hip Hop project funded by Legacy Trust UK and NE GENERATION is featured in a new short film produced by Legacy Trust UK to highlight their work nationally linked to the London 2012 Cultural Olympiad. It’s a great honour for our Urban Games & Hip Hop project to be featured as one of the highlighted projects nationally and is recognition of the impact and the success of the programme since its set up in 2010.
